Dog sniffs out live iguanas from stack of courier packages

Mexico City, Mexico — In Mexico City, National Guard rescue two live iguanas sent by parcel. The reptiles were found being sent inside a cardboard box wrapped in pieces of cloth and plastic.

In compliance with the National Public Security Strategy, National Guard personnel located a courier shipment that contained two live iguanas, which were in inadequate conditions for transport.

As part of the strategic actions to prevent the illegal trade of protected or endangered species, canines from the National Guard located the live iguanas inside the courier company.

“During preventive inspections, the dog became interested in a box with perforations that recorded movements from its interior, which was destined for the municipality of Zapopan, Jalisco,” National Guard reported.

Upon physical inspection, they realized that it contained a black spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura similis) approximately 90 centimeters long and a green iguana (iguana iguana), 30 centimeters long, which were wrapped in cloth and plastic.

“Because these species are classified as subject to special protection or threatened in accordance with the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-Semarnat-2010, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) based in Naucalpan de Juárez was notified for their protection, handling and final destination,” they said.
