Cozumel, Q.R. — A youth who was reported for purse snatching was taken into custody by Cozumel police. On Wednesday, 19-year-old Manuel “A” was handcuffed by police from 65th Avenue after a citizen arrest.
The purse snatching happened outside a central grocery store when the youth approached a woman, threatening her with a knife. After the woman handed over her bag, the youth fled on a waiting motorcycle.
A local San Miguel resident who saw what happened followed the getaway motorcycle. He was able to intercept the bike with his vehicle, causing both men to fall off. However, the driver quickly got back on and drove away, leaving his companion behind.
Other citizens helped restrain the left-behind youth until police arrived. The arresting officer found a 20 cm kitchen knife on his person and a woman’s handbag with more than 1,000 peso in cash.
The 19-year-old was positively identified by the female victim.
