Cozumel Police warning residents of extortion calls

Cozumel, Q.R. — Police in Cozumel are warning the general public about extortion calls being made to private phones. The Public Security Directorate says they are receiving citizen reports of extortion calls demanding money.

On Monday, elements of the Municipal Police responded to a telephone extortion report via 911. A Cozumel man was asked for 50,000 pesos in exchange for not physically harming his mother.

According to police,“the young man decided to hang up and report it to 911.”

The agents who responded to the report took note of the number from which the extortion call was made. Police say the call came from a Cancun number 998 651 2387. Cozumel Police say they have had reports of other extortion attempts against islanders.

Island officers say the other number coming up is 332 089 7160. The number was located by the Cyber Police of the State Attorney General’s Office and is a number coming from the Puente Grande Prison in the state of Jalisco.
