Cozumel homeowner shoots and kills alleged intruder with his own gun

Cozumel, Q.R. — An intruder was shot and killed by the homeowner in central Cozumel Monday night with his own gun. The shooting happened inside a private home located on 20th Avenue in San Miguel.

According to preliminary information, on Monday night, an armed man entered the private home shortly after 9:00 p.m. in what is believed to have been a robbery attempt, but was confronted by someone inside.

During their struggle, the gun went off killing the intruder. Responding medical personnel pronounced the man dead inside the home. Both the homeowner and the now-deceased are confirmed to be Mexican nationals, contrary to some local reports that the homeowner was of a foreign nationality.

According to a briefing by Cozumel Police, “the Public Security Directorate received a report to go to 20 avenue between 7 and 9 South of the central neighborhood. Upon arriving, they met with those who identified themselves as elements of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) who requested support for the cordoning off of the area since there was a dead person from gunshot wounds.”
