Cavers confirm grotto, water under collapsed Puerto Aventuras roadway

Puerto Aventuras, Q.R. — Caving experts and Civil Protection personnel have reviewed and mapped the cavern under the sinkhole along the federal highway near Puerto Aventuras that collapsed Saturday.

Civil Protection operational director Emmanuel Hedding confirmed that there is crystalline water, apparently without external connections, but there are grottos. He says the team has been mapping the area and that these studies will serve for a better road survey.

“Underneath there is clean, crystalline water in addition to cavern and grotto connections. Such work is important for the Ministry of Communications and Transportation to take into account when rebuilding the road,” he said.

The north-south lanes continue to be reduced while officials move forward with a repair project. The section of roadway collapsed Saturday afternoon via an “explosion” that was called in by a motorist.
