Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun firemen attended reports of a morning fire near José López Portillo Avenue. The fire was reported inside an abandoned hotel Thursday morning.
Residents in SM 69 smelled smoke when they noticed the flames inside the old building. By the time they arrived, the entire interior was engulfed in flames. Cancun firemen spent the better part of the morning putt the fire out, which was reportedly started by homeless people who frequent the abandoned site.
“On Thursday morning, 911 received a report of a fire in a vacant lot located near José López Portillo Avenue, SM 69,” Bomberos Cancun reported.
“The Cancun Fire Department, along with emergency services, immediately responded to the scene, successfully controlling the fire and preventing its spread. Full extinguishing efforts were in the area.
“We remind citizens that prevention is essential: avoiding littering or flammable materials on vacant lots can prevent this type of incident. Serve and Protect!”

It is the fourth fire in that building already this year.
