Authorities respond to report of dead woman off Tulum highway

Tulum, Q.R. — Authorities were at the scene where a dead woman was reported by a passing motorist early Monday. Several emergency units from the municipality of Tulum were parked along the federal highway near the entrance to Laguna de Kaan Luum in response to the report.

Local authorities were notified of the body around 7:30 a.m. Monday. The motorist who saw the woman stopped to help, reporting to emergency 9-1-1 that she did not appear to be breathing.

An ambulance was sent and paramedics verified that the woman, reported to be around 18 years old, was already dead. Early information says the body found had been shot to death. The body was located laying on the ground off the federal highway with a bullet wound to her head.

The area was sectioned off while responding authorities notified the Investigative Police (PDI) and Forensic Services. Initially, the incident was reported as a person found with signs of violence, however, after a preliminary review, authorities reclassified the case as a homicide after confirming the presence of a gunshot wound to the head.

PDI officers began the corresponding proceedings, collecting three shell casings from around the body.
