Cancun taxi driver arrested in physical assault of couple while search for others continue

Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities in Cancun continue their search for other taxi drivers involved in a physical assault. On the morning of December 4, two people were physically attacked by a group of Cancun taxi drivers on Tulum Avenue.

Motive for the attack is not known, however, a witness videoed approximately 28 seconds of the unprovoked physical assault that showed one taxi driver approach a person sitting down.

Within minutes, four more taxi drivers are seen arriving and to some degree, participating in the early morning Sunday assault against a couple. Police have since identified at least one involved taxi driver.

On December 4, Cancun police located one of the allegedly involved taxi drivers using city C5 surveillance. The driver was intercepted by police and taken into custody from his unit.

In a news breifing, the SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) of Quintana Roo reported on the arrest of one and continued search for the others.  

“Derived from the report of physical aggression in SM 5 of Cancun, the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Quintana Roo reports after receiving an alert to the emergency number 911, with the support of the surveillance cameras of Complex C5, it was possible to detect the vehicle of one of the alleged attackers, a taxi driver, who was detained and placed at the disposal of the corresponding authorities for the relevant investigations.

“It is worth mentioning that at all times the affected couple was attended to by police and emergency elements, who were safe.

“The FGE will be in charge of the investigations until they find the whereabouts of the people who participated in the attack that was recorded in the video on Tulum Avenue in front of a renowned supermarket.”
