Cancun police arrest pair who opened fire against officers during stop check

Cancun, Q.R. — Two men were detained by Cancun police after shooting at officers during a traffic stop check. The incident took place in SM 91 at the intersection of CTM and José López Portillo Avenues just before 8:30 p.m.

Patrolling officers pulled the vehicle over after it matched the description of a vehicle used in recent criminal activity. However, when the men inside got out, the driver, who claimed to be reaching inside the SUV for his driver’s license, reached for a gun instead.

At least one bullet pierced the outside of the Cancun police truck. Officers fired back and a pursuit began after the men got back into the SUV and drove off. The vehicle was eventually intercepted by other officers in SM 27 after a city Red Code was activated.

There were no injuries reported. Two men from inside the SUV were arrested and two loaded weapons seized.
