Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — A large building that burned Sunday in the municipality of Puerto Morelos was hit by lightning. The wood and palapa grass topped structure was reduced to a blackened frame after being hit during a thunderstorm.
The freak accident happened Sunday in the town of Lienzo Charro on the Ruta de los Cenotes in the municipality of Puerto Morelos. The owner, along with several others, stood by and watched as the fire quickly spread from one dry grass rooftop to the other. Within minutes, the two-sectioned building was eaten by flames.
On Monday morning, the State Attorney General released a brief statement about the fire. “The Attorney General of the State of Quintana Roo reports that in relation to the fire that occurred in the Lienzo Charro on the Ruta de los Cenotes in the municipality of Puerto Morelos, the investigation indicates that this incident was due to inclement weather, being a lightning strike that struck the facility and was attended to opportunely by Civil Protection bodies.”
