Cozumel, Q.R. — A water rescue team in Cozumel recovered the body of an elderly man after he was seen floating in the sea. On Wednesday, police were part of the recovery mission of a 72-year-old American man off a beach of the island’s northwest shore.

His body was discovered by a passing boat at 10:06 a.m. whose captain notified authorities. When emergency services arrived, the current had already dragged him several kilometers out to sea.

Mexico’s Navy were called in to recover the body. They began searching for the man, who was reported seen floating face down off the northern coast. It was after noon when Navy personnel finally located and retrieved the body from the water.

According to preliminary information, two Americans from New Mexico, one of whom has been identified as the now-deceased James N, was staying with his wife on the island. At 9:30 a.m., the couple went swimming with snorkel equipment. It was about half an hour later that the wife was notified of the floating body.
