Authorities verify vendor permits after Cozumel weekend beach brawl

Cozumel, Q.R. — Cozumel authorities began a permit verification operation in beach areas after a weekend brawl between umbrella renters. The fight was captured on video and uploaded to social media showing two and three men physically fighting over domain.

The fight happened Saturday afternoon at Playa Chen Rio in the eastern section of the island. The video captures them physically punching and kicking each other. The ‘victor’ is seen using the metal base of an umbrella stand to fend off potential reattacks as he finally walks across the highway back to the beach.

The video generated a fair amount of negative feedback since that type of behavior creates a negative image for the destination.

Since the video went viral, Ociel González González of Cozumel City Council said that they began permit verifications for beach vendors.

Authorities from National Guard, Public Security Directorate, Civil Protection, Ecology, Zofemat, Urban Development, as well as Verification and Commercial Regulation personnel participated in the weekend operation.

Authorities did not say if the men involved in the weekend beach brawl were legal vendors with permits or if they would face any charges.
