During previous meetings, an agreement was made regarding the correction of various issues related to the operation of the Cancun International Airport. According to Lezama, the key issues addressed included customs operations and their impact on the flow of passenger traffic, the management of the National Migration Institute (INM), especially in relation to the handling of inadmissible tourists, and waiting times at immigration checkpoints.

Lezama said they also discussed the presence of irregular transport services (Uber) at the airport, a situation that requires attention to improve security and visitor experience. She did not elaborate on possible resolutions regarding the rideshare company.

Throughout this year, several work meetings have been held with federal and state authorities and Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur), the company that manages the Cancun airport.

Lezama says these meetings were held with the aim of identifying solutions to the airport’s main problems.

In this context, the efforts made to improve operational processes were highlighted with important advancements in operations. She says improvements in migration signage have been made with the installation of 16 new signs between the three main terminals which facilitates the orientation of passengers as they transit through the airport.

The problem of interruptions in the E-Gates was resolved by implementing backup systems (no break) that ensure their continuous operation, and that additional maintenance has been carried out during peak hours to avoid inconveniences.

A shuttle service was established which now makes 136 daily trips between the three terminals, reducing the maximum waiting time to between five and seven minutes.

Governor Mara Lezama reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to continue promoting tourism development, ensuring that the infrastructure and services of the Cancun International Airport are up to the growing demand.

Earlier this year, Governor Lezama met with Mexican Customs after being notified of an outdated fee being passed on to tourists. Tourists landing at the Cancun International Airport with more than one electronic device were being charged a tax. That tax has since been eliminated at the Cancun International Airport. It is still being charged at other airports around the state and the country.
