Cozumel, Q.R. — An island man with a history of arrests was shot Wednesday night in central Cozumel. A man identified as Benito Jesús “N” was shot several times near the intersection of 2nd Street and 10th Avenue north.

While fleeing bullets, the victim ran, collapsing in front of a taxi stand where he was found by police around 8:00 p.m. Area residents reported hearing multiple gunfire, which prompted island officers to the scene.
Laying on the sidewalk outside the taxi stand was Benito Jesús “N”, known locally as El Beny. He was transferred to hospital in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.
Local authorities cordoned off the area, while forensics collected evidence including spent shell casings that were found scattered on the street. Authorities are continuing a search operation to find those responsible.
According to reports, it is the second time this year Benito Jesús “N” has been the direct target of a shooting attack. In January, he was also shot at but managed to escape.

Local reports say El Beny has a history of arrests, being connected to a local drug trade. He was taken into custody in 2024 on allegations of being part of a criminal cell that operated drug sales in the Puerta Maya area.
