Cancun driver killed for cash in passenger robbery

Cancun, Q.R. — UPDATED: A Cancun driver died after being the victim of a knife attack allegedly perpetrated by one of his passengers. He was found seriously injured inside his car on Kukulcán Street.

Area residents in SM 26 phoned 9-1-1 after hearing a loud altercation coming from inside the vehicle. Municipal Police located a white Nissan Versa with its driver behind the wheel.

The male driver was found with a deep wound to his neck. He was transferred to hospital where he died early Friday morning. The deceased has been identified as Israel Amador “N”.

According to preliminary reports, the driver had just finished a ride in the area when he was attacked by his passenger during a robbery for cash. The attacker managed to flee the scene. There is no information yet on his whereabouts or whether he has been arrested.

UPDATE: According to Melisa Merlos, Uber Mexico’s external communications, the man killed was not related to Uber as initially reported. Local authorities have not commented on if the deceased man was a driver for a different digital platform.
