Arrest made after Cancun police officer killed in broad daylight

Cancun, Q.R. — One man has been arrested after the broad daylight shooting of an on-duty Cancun police officer outside a convenience store Wednesday. The shooting happened on José López Portillo Avenue in SM 68 around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon while the officer sat inside his unit in the parking lot of a convenience store.

Captured on several surveillance cameras was the image of a sole male approaching the police unit on the driver’s side window and opening fire, killing the police officer. An alert was immediately posted for the arrest of the man seen on the video.

Elements of Policía Quintana Roo arrived to cordon off the area. Paramedics also arrived, only to pronounce the officer on scene.

Head of State Public Security Jesús Alberto Capella Ibarra, reported the attack on social networks, identifying the alleged shooter as Brian Hiram. Cancun police were quick to find the black getaway motorcycle and weapon believed used in the killing along Francisco I. Madero Avenue.

Shortly afterwards, Capella Ibarra announced the arrest of Hiram. The deceased Cancun police officer has been identified as José del Carmen Guerra Pinto.
