American man arrested at Cancun International with illegal firearm

Cancun, Q.R. — A man arriving at the Cancun International Airport from Saint Louis was arrested Thursday on firearm charges. The unidentified American man was taken into custody by elements of the National Guard after he was found entering the country with an illegal gun and magazines.

Authorities located the 9-millimerer gun and three full magazines after he entered the international arrivals area. Since he was unable to produce a permit to have the weapon, he was taken into legal custody.

In Mexico, unless the bearer has explicit authorization from the Secretariat of National Defense beforehand, it is illegal to enter Mexican territory with any firearm. Anyone wishing to travel with a firearm must obtain permission ahead of time from the Secretariat of National Defense.

Anyone found entering Mexico with a firearm or ammunition without a permit could face up to five years in prison.
