Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — A main pier of Puerto Morelos will finally be repaired. Over the weekend, Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz was successful in coming to an agreement with Sedetur for the repairs.
During a City Council meeting with the Secretary of State Tourism (Sedetur) on Friday, Puerto Moreloes came to an agreement for the reconstruction of the fishermen’s pier located at Ventana al Mar.
In a statement, Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz said she was pleased at landing the agreement with the state in order to carry out the repair of the dock that drives the economy of Puerto Morelos and strengthens the tourist activity.
She explained that the state will cover 50 percent of the cost of the repair and the municipal government the other 50 percent, estimating the repairs to cost more than 3 million pesos.
“The work will be carried out once all the environmental permits granted by the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) have been obtained. Until then, the work will begin with personnel from the city council itself,” the mayor said.
Merari Tziu said that with the passing of time, the dock has deteriorated more and more. The town’s busy dock, she added, is essential for aquatic and tourist activities. She says she expects work to start in coming weeks under the repair project that she has prepared in conjunction with Sedetur.
The repair project is also being done with participation from the secretaries of Urban Development, Tourism, and the head of Zofemat Puerto Morelos.
