Xpu-Ha added to municipal Blue Flag certification list

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) is getting ready to begin beach studies for the municipality’s Blue Flag renewals. Irving Rafael Lili Madrigal, the Director of Solidaridad Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre (Zofemat), says the studies will include tests on sand and water.

He says studies will begin on the quality of sand, water and the beach itself along the Solidaridad coastline in order to obtain the Blue Flag and Platinum distinctions. He says this year, the municipality intends to expand their beach distinctions to include other areas.

According to Lili Madrigal, Xpu-Ha, Playa Caribe and the beach on calle 8 will be included in the testing so they can be submitted for Blue Flag distinctions. He says the evaluations will be carried out between February and March to ensure these beaches meet the criteria.

He says they are hoping that for next year, during the 2026 season, these beaches will be certified and added to the municipality’s list of Blue Flag and Platinum certified beaches.

“During this process it is essential to maintain the cleanliness of the sand and the quality of the water month after month since these are key criteria for obtaining certification,” explained Lili Madrigal.

He says Xpu-Ha, Playa Caribe and the beach on Calle 8, all have high potential to meet the international standards of sustainability and environmental quality. Lili Madrigal pointed out that the main focus is on the conservation and maintenance of the natural conditions of the beaches.

He reported that additional infrastructure will be installed, such as showers and bathrooms, to improve the experience of visitors.
