Fleet suspended for day after ferry heading for mainland begins to smoke

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — An Xcaret Xailing ferry heading to the mainland from Cozumel began to emit smoke Tuesday. The incident happened during a 7:00 a.m. island departure to Playa del Carmen.

The ferry was transporting 65 passengers when smoke began to emerge from the back of the vessel. The ferry continued its journey to Playa del Carmen, however, docking safely where startled passengers disembarked.

Once empty, federal authorities, who were waiting for the smoking boat, ordered the vessel docked under the supervision of the Harbor Master’s Office for an inspection. Personnel from the Navy, the Xcaret Xailing company and the Harbor Master’s Office were at the scene Tuesday to address the incident and ensure the safety of passengers.
