Woman charged after merchant reports customer paid with fake bill

Tequila, Jalisco — A woman in the state of Jalisco has been charged after being found in possession of hundreds worth of fake bills. The woman was arrested last week and officially charged Tuesday.

The Public Ministry of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) in Jalisco had the charges laid after Esperanza “C” was detained with apocryphal bills in the town of Tequila.

“This person is likely responsible for committing the crime of currency counterfeiting in the form of use and storage of counterfeit currency,” the FGR said in a statement.

Her arrest came after she was reported by a local market merchant for paying for items with a fake bill. Patrolling officers located the accused, Esperanza “C”, on Castañeda Street in the Obrera neighborhood of Tequila.

During a search of her person, arresting officers located a purse with 39 counterfeit bills of different denominations.
