Bacalar, Q. R. — A forest fire that has been active for almost four days has forced families from the community of David Gustavo Gutiérrez in the municipality of Bacalar to vacate their homes.
The fire, which is being fueled by extreme dryness and strong winds, also caused a power outage. The forest fire was reported Saturday in the region of the Altos de Sevilla community. By Tuesday afternoon, out-of-control flames began to affect the community of David Gustavo Gutiérrez, consuming jungle and knocking down CFE posts, cutting off electricity.
State Rural Police evicted families and transferred them to Bacalar hostels. The fire is believed to have started by an intentionally-set agriculture burn that became out of control. Brigades continue to fight the fire.
