Political team member gunned down during PDC rally

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A political campaign team member in Playa del Carmen was shot to death during a rally Sunday night. The team was rallying on 90th Avenue in the Ejido neighborhood when the shooting happened.

The man, Óscar “N” of approximately 30, was gunned down while outside a building. He was part of a campaign team promoting a new Playa del Carmen mayor in the upcoming June elections.

Witnesses told police that the shooter(s) arrived aboard a taxi who shot at the man numerous times. The shooting appears to be targeted. Local authorities have released a statement regarding the deadly attack but did not provide a possible motive.

“The FGE reports the beginning of an investigation for the crime of qualified homicide in the Municipality of Solidaridad to the detriment of a person of withheld identity who was part of the campaign team of the candidate for Municipal Presidency of the Morena party.

“The events occurred on 34th Street between 90th and 95th Avenues in Colonia Pedregal, in this municipality.

“The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo, together with the Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace and Security, is working to locate and arrest the person or persons responsible for this unfortunate event,” the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) said.

Last week in Cancun another political candidate team member was shot and killed, however, local authorities have determined that shooting to be a personal vendetta and not politically motivated.
