Navy operation successful in 840 kilo seizure of cocaine

Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán — A special Navy operation lead to the successful seizure of 840 kilos of cocaine. The drugs were located by the Mexican Navy off the coast of Lázaro Cárdenas in the state of Michoacán.

Navy elements were successful in securing the 840 kilos of cocaine at sea Thursday after an investigation lead them to the vessel transporting the drugs.

In a statement, the Secretaría de Marina reported that the seizure was “derived from field and office work through which it became known that a vessel was probably carrying out the transfer of illicit cargo for which various units of this Institution were deployed by sea, air and land to provide timely follow-up to the aforementioned boat.”

That allowed them to intercept the vessel. However, at the sight of authorities, crew tossed what the Navy later determined were 32 packages of cocaine overboard into the sea. The floating packages were retrieved from the water and secured.

The crew were able to get away. Arrests were not made.
