Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — An overnight electrical blackout left Isla Mujeres residents in the dark. During CFE maintenance on the mainland, an error caused a default in the submarine cable that powers the island.
The entire island was left without electricity for the night as daytime temperatures have been soaring to 40C with very little cool down by evening. After several hours of being without power, Mayor Atenea Gómez requested an explanation from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE).
According to Gómez, the problem was blamed a failure in one of the underground lines. On social media, Gómez said “Due to the general blackout in the municipality of Isla Mujeres, it was requested from the outset that the CFE disclose the causes of it and so far the only thing they have reported is that one of the underground lines that supply power to the submarine wiring suffered a failure while performing maintenance.
“The CFE informed us that the fault was in the Punta Sam line.”
CFE personnel reportedly worked throughout the night to make the repairs and have power restored early Thursday morning. CFE has not commented on the island power failure after only months earlier, replacing the more than 30-year-old submarine cable that powers the island.
