Holbox, Q.R. — After a failed attempt to come to a payment agreement with ejidos, the CFE has temporarily suspended the voltage line change that was planned. On Tuesday, Holbox mayor Alejandro Cañedo Cantú said that the project has been suspended since the two sides could not come to an agreement.
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has been in negotiations with the Solferino ejidos for payment they are requesting for the CFE to run the submarine cable on their land.
Since an agreement cannot be reached, the project to change a cable that would significantly increase voltage to the island, has been put on hold. The changed cable would see a power increase to the island that would solve blackouts during high tourist seasons when electrical demand peaks.
Cañedo Cantú says that in the meantime, CFE personnel are installing emergency plants on the island to avoid power blackouts during Semana Santa.
