Gunmen fleeing police kill innocent bystander outside Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — A car chase outside the town of Leona Vicario in the municipality of Puerto Morelos ended tragically when the vehicle used by alleged gunmen to flee police ran over and caused the death of an innocent bystander.

Municipal police of Puerto Morelos commissioned in the town of Leona Vicario, reported that the occupants of a car they were in pursuit of had a Uzi submachine gun and a pistol, which they used to shoot at a house from their moving vehicle and then at police.

The accident happened 2:30 p.m. Sunday when, during the chase, the gunman’s car went out of control, hitting a tree and flipping onto its side, but not before hitting a moto-taxi driver.

The accident caused injuries to one of those inside the car, while the other three, one of which was a woman, fled the area by running into the thick bush. The injured man was taken to hospital by paramedics and placed under arrest.

The moto-taxi driver, 40-year-old Jorge N, was killed. The gunman’s car had Mexico City plates. The Navy of Mexico, military police, gendarmerie, ministerial police, state preventive police and criminal experts from the State Attorney General’s Office arrived on scene.

A helicopter from the Secretariat of Public Security of Quintana Roo also joined in the search for the fleeing criminals, but no additional arrests were reported.

Police say the man hospitalized and arrested has since been charged with homicide.
