Lázaro Cárdenas, Q.R. — Federal fishery inspectors seized a boat and its contents after the two on board were unable to produce permits. The pair of local fishermen had their boat, gear and catch seized by the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca) Tuesday.
In a statement Thursday, the Secretary of the Marina (Semar) reported making the seizure in coordination with the Comisión Nacional de Acuacultura y Pesca (Conapesca) during an at-sea patrol. While traveling waters off the coast of Lázaro Cárdenas, officials came upon a small boat with two on board that were seen fishing.
The two men were found in possession of 18 kilos of lobster and 10 kilos of octopus and no fishing permits.
In a statement, the Ninth Naval Region said the find was made during one of the routine maritime surveillance tours carried out by Semar personnel and Conapesca inspectors after seeing a smaller vessel engaged in fishing activities.
“Upon approaching and requesting the corresponding permits, the two crew members stated that they did not have them which is why the federal authorities seized, as a precaution, 18 kilograms of lobster, already beheaded and ready to be sold in the tail, in addition to 10 kilograms of octopus.
“The vessel, as well as the fishing gear, were placed in the custody of Conapesca for the corresponding administrative procedures.
“The Navy maintains its commitment to guarantee the maintenance of the rule of law in national seas and coasts for the conservation and protection of its natural resources.”
