Feds rescue 8 turtles from box sent via courier from Quintana Roo

San Luis Potosí — Federal officials at the international airport of San Luis Potosí rescued eight turtles they found inside a cardboard box. Federal officials found the turtles in a parcel delivery section of the airport.

Elements of the National Guard, along with PROFEPA specialists, located the Monte Mojina Tortoises. They were each found wrapped in a white tube sock and placed inside a cardboard box.

The package came from Quintana Roo and was bound for San Juan del Río, Querétaro. Federal officials are investigating the addresses of those involved since the turtles are a protected species and their shipment is considered a violation against biodiversity under the federal criminal code of Mexico.
