Elderly swimmer dies off central Puerto Morelos beach

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — An elderly swimmer died off a Puerto Morelos beach Saturday. The man, reported to be 77 and from Canada, died by drowning at Playa Sol in central Puerto Morelos Saturday.

Despite immediate assistance from lifeguards and paramedics, the man was pronounced dead in the sand. The accident happened around 3:20 p.m. at Playa Sol, which is known as Ojo de Agua, near a lifeguard tower.

Other swimmers noticed the man floating in the sea. A lifeguard rushed out in an attempt to return him to shore. The on-duty lifeguard performed CPR, however, the man did not respond. Paramedics arrived only to confirmed the death.

Puerto Morelos Municipal Police covered the body and cordoned off the area while they waited for authorities to remove the body. An autopsy will confirm the man’s official cause of death.
