Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Three people have each been sentenced to over 20 years in prison for their roles in the murder of four Playa del Carmen inspectors. The State Attorney General (FGE) announced their sentences Thursday after they were found guilty of aggravated homicide in late September.

According to the FGE, Manuel Edmundo Muñoz Vázquez was sentenced to 48 years in Mexican prison, while José Oswaldo Pech Jiménez was given a 27 year sentence and Néstor Enrique Aguilar Velasco, 25.
Authorities said they were sentenced after being found responsible for the crime of aggravated homicide to the detriment of four inspectors of the Directorate of Fiscalization of the Playa del Carmen City Council.
“The events for which they were sentenced occurred on February 11, 2023, in a bar located in the Ejidal neighborhood of Playa del Carmen where the victims arrived aboard a Chevrolet Silverado vehicle, owned by the Playa del Carmen City Council, to carry out inspection work,” they FGE reported.
“Upon arriving at the establishment, the now-convicted individuals, who were carrying firearms, confiscated the cell phones of the employees and locked them in the dressing rooms.
“They then subdued and beat the inspectors with wooden planks and spiked boards until they were unconscious, and subsequently attacked them with knives, killing them.”

The FGE said “José Oswaldo Pech Jiménez and Néstor Enrique Aguilar Velasco forced the bar employees to clean up the spilled blood. They then transported the bodies in the bed of a Chevrolet pickup truck and abandoned them, along with the vehicle at the intersection of 18th Street and 70th Street before fleeing the scene.”
