Ejidos hold march after rejecting CFE has permit to run Holbox cable

Holbox, Q.R. — Ejidos from Kantunilkín participated in a march Sunday that ended in front of their City Hall. Police patrolled the area while the nearly two-kilometer long line of protesting Ejidos demanded payment from CFE after rejecting a letter that stated they had a permit to run the Holbox electricity line.

It has been nearly a week since they began making the payment demands from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) for land use rights to run an electric cable to the island of Holbox.

Work to run the cable from the mainland to the island was halted in late September when they began to pressure the CFE for land use payments. Since then, they have taken to road blocks, which has generated long lines of traffic for drivers trying to reach the island.

During their Sunday march, Ejido Commissioner, Víctor Pech Moo reported that the Regional Coordinator of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Darío Reyes Velasco, provided a statement saying they have a permit from a former Ejido commissioner, a permit Pech Moo said was not valid because it does not include consent from the Ejido assembly.
