Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A company bus driver who is alleged to have fallen asleep at the wheel found himself involved in a highway accident. On Friday, Transit officials responded to motorist’s reports of a two vehicle crash south of Playa del Carmen.
The large bus crashed into a small private cargo truck, seriously injuring the driver. The accident happened shortly after 7:00 a.m. near the area of Paamul. Police found the small cargo truck off the highway in brush with extensive damage.
The driver was found trapped between his front seat and steering wheel and required assistance in being cut free from his truck. He was transported to a Playa del Carmen hospital in serious condition.
The driver of the company bus was detained by Highway Division authorities who were also in charge of having both vehicles towed to a city corral.
