Cozumel sailor rescues drowning woman with ‘boots and everything’

Cozumel, Q.R. — A woman seen drowning off a Cozumel beach was rescued Monday. A cyclist passing by the area spotted the woman struggling in the water near Playa Mezcalitos.

The cyclist was able to get the attention of Navy personnel who rushed in (in full uniform) to pull the woman to shore. She was located approximately 15 meters from the beach. The rescue happened at the east end of the island Monday.

According to Cozumel Police, “in the face of the emergency, one of the sailors who was traveling in a patrol left his weapons and jumped into the water swimming with boots and everything to where the woman was.

“He managed to carry her out of the water in his arms. She was in a state of shock.” When they arrived at the beach, an American man met them who said he was the husband of the 32-year-old woman who he identified as being from Chetumal.

“Once the woman stabilized, she was informed that personnel of the Mexican Navy of the Naval Police had requested an ambulance, however she said that she was already well and they would go home on their own means.”
