Cozumel police say false licenses a crime

Cozumel, Q.R. — The deputy director of Municipal Transit of Cozumel is asking people to not buy driver’s licenses on the Internet after the finding of numerous false licenses.

Gerardo Arzate Jiménez, deputy director of Municipal Transit of Cozumel, says police have found the sale of the fake licenses through social networks and have lodged criminal complaints against those selling them.

Given this situation, he said that citizens continue to fall for the deception, buying driver’s licenses for cars and motorcyclists that are supposedly from the state of Guerrero. He says the fake licenses, which are being promoted as official, are being sold for between 500 and 1,000 peso.

Arzate Jiménez says that anyone caught using a false driver’s license will be sent to the State Attorney General’s Office since carrying false identification is a crime punishable by law.

In May, Ministerial Police reported finding an out-of-state group offering fake identification online. Police found the group operating from a private house in central Playa del Carmen. The group were reportedly from the state of Guerrero, selling the counterfeit identification through the Internet.
