Cancun, Q.R. — Local authorities have begun an investigation after a cement truck fell into the Cancun Nichupté Lagoon. The accident happened Friday morning when the driver miscalculated his distance and toppled into the water.

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) are looking into the mishap.
According to available information, the accident occurred early Friday mornign when the driver of the truck went over the edge during a maneuver. The driver was not seriously injured. He was rescued from the sinking truck by a team of construction workers.
On site cranes were used to prevent the cement truck from sinking. The same cranes were able to pull the cement truck from the lagoon before it sank. A yellow containment barrier was placed around the scene to contain possible leaks and spillage.

Local authorities have not made any public comments on the Friday morning accident.
