Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A toppled tree and downed power lines were felt at the start of the entry of the polar air around Riviera Maya. As the cold air began to arrive, winds picked up and eventually toppled a weak tree that landed on a house.
Firemen in Playa del Carmen were asked to remove the palm tree that had fallen over and landed against a private home. Firemen were quick to use a chain saw to cut the tree free from the house and haul it away.
The SPC of Solidaridad (Secretaría de Protección Civil, Prevención de Riesgos y Bomberos de Solidaridad) reported that “operational elements and firefighters supported the removal of a tree that fell on a house in Col. Misión del Carmen.
“They carried out the corresponding maneuvers for cutting and removing. No injuries were reported.”
Hours later in Cancun, a section of city road was shut after neighbors reported an explosion and subsequent fire. Heavy rains that began Monday night are being blamed for the falling of a set of power lines.
The live wires fell to the soaked ground, hitting a car in the process. Cancun Transit were at the scene in SM 240 where they blocked off the affected section of road until CFE arrived.
In a brief statement Monday night, Tránsito de Cancún said “given the report of high voltage cables downed on Av. Prolongación Tulum with Av. Niño Héroes, we maintain partial preventive closures to allow emergency units to work at the scene.”
Area residents reported the sudden bright flash around 9:00 p.m. after the rains began. City crews arrived to find a set of high-voltage cables laying on the ground. Both CFE and Civil Protection arrived to deal with the cables.
On Tuesday morning, residents in the state of Quintana Roo woke to cool temperatures with the entry of the polar air mass from the U.S. State Civil Protection has issued a local warning of strong north winds, cool temperatures and intermittent heavy rains due to the cold front.
