Acapulco hotel catches fire less than a month after reopening

Acapulco, Guerrero — Authorities continue to investigate the cause of a massive fire that destroyed three rooms of an Acapulco hotel. The blaze broke out on the upper floor of the Emporio Hotel on the afternoon of January 3.

Flames ate through at least one room and heavily damaged two others. The floors below the affected rooms were also damaged.

According to the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection of Guerrero, the fire started around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday. The building was evacuated while emergency services attended to the fire.

The Emporio Hotel was one of the most heavily damaged by Hurricane Otis in late October. Authorities noted that 200 of the 300 rooms of the hotel were in service and that at the time of the fire, the hotel had an 85 percent occupancy rate.

There were no injuries reported during the 12th floor fire. The Emporio Hotel is one of four on the Acapulco beach strip known as the Golden Zone of Acapulco, that opened for the holidays.

The Emporio Hotel opened its doors December 10 after Category 5 Hurricane Otis ripped through the city in late October.
