Xcaret issues Riviera Maya hotel guest death statement

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — An American man barely of retirement age died Wednesday at a Riviera Maya resort. The man, aged 67, was a guest of an Xcaret property south of Playa del Carmen in Riviera Maya.

The elderly American man was found collapsed inside his hotel room and rushed to a Playa del Carmen hospital where he was pronounced. He was vacationing with his family at the time of the incident.

It was family members who reported him fainting in his hotel room Wednesday afternoon. Paramedics rushed him to a private hospital in Playa del Carmen where he arrived around 4:30 p.m. He is reported to have died from a heart attack.

Grupo Xcaret, who own the Riviera Maya hotel where the incident happened, released an official statement:

“We regret the sensitive death of a person of American nationality, aged 67, which occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 13.

“According to information provided by his relatives, the victim fainted inside his room. Immediately, the paramedic team provided assistance and the emergency protocol was activated while they coordinated his transfer by ambulance to the Amerimed Hospital.

“The medical team confirms that the appropriate resuscitation procedure was maintained during the patient’s admission to the hospital, subsequently recording his unfortunate death at 4:30 p.m. The cause of death reported was cardiorespiratory failure. We join in the grief of his family and friends.”
