Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The driver of a private pickup truck was killed early Thursday morning when his vehicle was crushed by a pole. Highway motorists who saw the man speeding along the road said he suddenly lost control of his truck and hit the highway median.
It was shortly before 6:00 a.m. when Riviera Maya drivers reported the single-vehicle accident to emergency services. At the scene, police and paramedics found the driver, the sole occupant of the truck, dead behind the wheel.
The driver was traveling the Riviera Maya highway toward Playa del Carmen when he hit the concrete median from where he slammed into a palm tree and concrete CFE pole. While the palm tree snapped and fell to the ground, the broken concrete post landed on the truck, crushing the cab.
National Guard Highways were at the scene to direct traffic around the accident site. A crane was brought in to remove and upright the heavy concrete pole from off the truck. The driver has not been identified.
