Mapastepec, Chiapas — A plane loaded with narcotics has been seized by the Secretariat of National Defense in Chiapas. The plane was discovered August 31 by elements of the Mexican Army and Air Force after it was detected in Mexican air space.
In a September 2 statement, the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional reported detecting an unidentified aircraft from South America. Four helicopters and Land Reaction Forces of the Territorial Commands of the Mexican Army were alerted to its presence.
Due to radar and visual contact, military personnel were able to locate the suspicious aircraft which landed 20 kilometers southwest of Mapastepec, Chiapas. The crew onboard fled after realizing military personnel were on their way. In doing so, they abandoned the alleged illicit cargo and aircraft, leaving the area in different directions.
The aircraft was inspected. Military personnel located 20 packages of cocaine weighing approximately 657 kilograms.
