Six Zacatecas police officers shot to death by commandos at outdoor sports complex

Calera, Zacatecas — Six police officers were shot to death Tuesday morning at an outdoor sports complex in Calera. The ambushed shooting left the Chief of Police and five officers dead.

According to preliminary information, four officers were exercising in the outdoor sports complex when they were approached by a commando who opened fire. Two other officers from inside the sports facility ran out to assist. In doing so, they too, were shot.

A total of six municipal police were killed. Five were pronounced on scene, while the sixth, the Chief of Police, died in hospital. Law officials in the municipality of Calera where the shooting took place continue to search for those responsible.

In a brief Twitter message, the Governor of Zacatecas, David Monreal Ávila, condemned the murder of the six officers and called on the State Peace and Security Committee to act promptly and efficiently to find those responsible for the multi-homicide.

“I express my condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the police officers who unfortunately lost their lives today in a cowardly attack in the municipality of Calera. I have instructed the Peace building Table to act promptly and efficiently to find the guilty parties,” he posted on social media.
