Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A fast moving brush fire along a section of Felipe Carrillo Puerto highway has been put out. Residents in the community of X-Hazil Sur attempted to snuff flames while they waited for firemen.
The fire was reported Sunday afternoon outside the community of X-Hazil Sur in Felipe Carrillo Puerto. A lack of rain and strong winds helped spread the wild fire while nearby ejido residents did their best to contain it.
Municipal firemen along with Civil Protection personnel, military members of National Defence and workers from a nearby section of Maya Train participated in battling flames.
Due to the dry conditions and wind gusts, several nearby homes were in danger of being consumed.
According to Ejidal Commissariat President Gabriel Santos, the fire started on a recently donated plot of land meant for a police station. He was made aware of the fire that was spreading fast and endangering nearby homes.
A group of ejidos began the task of trying to put out the initial fire area while they waited for help. Due to the fast movement of the fire, residents requested assistance from various bodies to help put it out.
More than 250 meters of land was burned in the Sunday afternoon wild fire. Authorities have not provided information on a possible cause.
