Police track down trio known to extort Riviera Maya businesses

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A trio known for extorting Riviera Maya businesses have been arrested and jailed. The three males were taken into police custody in two separate arrests Friday.

According to the State Attorney General (FGE), César Gabriel “N” was taken into custody from a parking lot on the Tulum-Boca Paila highway where he allegedly went to threaten and extort the owners of a business.

The other two, Santiago “N” and Esteban “N”, were arrested for extorting the contract manager of a Puerto Morelos construction site.

“On February 12 of the current year, they arrived aboard a vehicle at a site located on the Chetumal-Puerto Juárez federal highway in the municipality of Puerto Morelos where they demanded that the employees, who were threatened with a firearm, provide the telephone number of the engineer in charge of the project.

“That same day, the victim, whose identity is withheld, received a phone call in which they told him that “the boys” would show up at the work site daily to sell drugs and that the engineer needed to start paying their fee.”

The FGE said that “due to their probable participation in events that could constitute the crime of extortion, personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office captured three male people in the municipalities of Tulum and Puerto Morelos.”
