Playa del Carmen firemen attend to large palapa fire near Paamul

Riviera Maya, Q. R. — A large palapa fire near Paamul in Riviera Maya was attended to by Solidaridad firemen Monday night. Authorities on scene reported only material damage and no injuries in the late night blaze.

At least one large palapa was completely consumed after catching fire. In a briefing Tuesday, the SPC of Solidaridad (Secretaría de Protección Civil, Prevención de Riesgos y Bomberos de Solidaridad) said they responded to the report of a large palapa fire near the area of Paamul, approximately 10 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen.

Firemen were at the scene and able to completely extinguish the fire without incident. Authorities remained at the scene to determine a cause.

“Firefighters responded to a report of a fire in a palapa near Paamul and managed to completely extinguish it. Subsequently, operational elements carried out a verification tour to determine the cause of the fire. There was only material damage,” the SPC reported.

An object that could have been an ignition device was found at the scene. Although Solidaridad Civil Protection also released a similar news briefing on the fire, neither agency commented on the object found. An official cause for the fire is not known.
