Navy personnel extinguish burning boat off Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Secretariat of the Navy provided help to a burning boat in the Bay of Isla Mujeres Tuesday. The tourist vessel caught fire early Tuesday morning after allegedly refueling.

A Marina boat with three motors lined up with the burning vessel and threw sea spray on the flames to put out the fire.

The boat was near Playa Centro when it caught fire around 8:30 a.m. Personnel from the Mexican Navy’s Fifth Naval Region provided support in extinguishing the fire.

“This action was carried out when naval personnel observed a smaller vessel on fire near Isla Mujeres, prompting the immediate departure of a Defender-type vessel from the Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) in Isla Mujeres and another smaller vessel with trained personnel and specialized equipment to respond to the emergency.

“Upon locating the vessel, naval personnel, in coordination with other vessels in the area, proceeded to assist in extinguishing the fire. The fire was completely contained with no hydrocarbon spills in the vicinity or injuries.

“The affected vessel was secured to another smaller vessel in order to ensure that there was no spill of any kind,” they reported.

The boat was reported to have been a tourist vessel that had refueled for a tour to Isla Contoy when the fire started. Authorities have not provided an official cause for the fire that completely consumed the boat.
