Federal highway death: Playa del Carmen records first electric scooter fatality

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A local woman was killed Wednesday morning while riding her electric scooter along the federal highway. Emergency responders were sent to the scene of the accident around 7:00 a.m. in north Playa del Carmen.

The woman riding the electric scooter was hit by a compact car while she was traveling on Playa del Carmen Boulevard. Eye witnesses told police the woman was crossing the highway toward the central median when she was hit.

The front of the car that hit her was left heavily damaged with the scooter lodged under the front engine. Police and paramedics found the woman laying in the center of the road several meters from the impact point.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Municipal traffic officers secured the area to facilitate the coroner. The driver of the car was taken in for questioning. The female victim has not been identified.
