Name change from Solidaridad to Playa del Carmen on city council agenda

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Mayor Lili Campos says a name change for the city could be on the next agenda. During her weekly press conference, Campos acknowledged that the name Solidaridad for Playa del Carmen generates a lot of confusion.

On Tuesday during her press conference, Campos proposed a citizen survey to determine whether or not to move forward with the name change from Solidaridad, the name of the municipality, to Playa del Carmen.

She admitted the confusion from attending the recent Tourism Fair in Madrid, saying that Playa del Carmen was one of the most visited kiosks in the Mexico pavilion. She said that most people referenced the city either by Playa del Carmen or Riviera Maya, but not Solidaridad.

She added that both local and international businessmen made her see the need for a name change in order to position the Playa del Carmen brand.

First, she says she will meet with state authorities to analyze the possibility of a name change and then a public consultation.

“The real reason why it is called Solidaridad is because President Salinas de Gortari at that time, launched his Solidaridad program and the municipalities that were created at that time in 1993 were called Solidaridad,” Campos explained.
