Mobility Commission approves general public use of golf carts in Tulum

Tulum, Q.R. — The Mobility Commission of the XVIII Legislature has given the green light for the operation of golf carts in the town of Tulum. The operation was approved Tuesday following a request last year by the Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo).

The recent approval means approximately 400 golf carts will be able to be driven on central Tulum streets as an alternative form of transportaiton. The concessions have been awarded to four private companies.

The companies include CMX Logistic Center SA de CV who were granted 30 permits, Inmomercaqroo SA de CV who were granted 90 concessions, Metromobility Group SA de CV, who were given the okay for 112 and Roasteryc SA de CV, who will be able to provide 168 golf carts for public use.

The approval for golf cart use in Tulum has created mixed reactions mostly from members of the Tiborones del Caribe taxi union in Tulum. On social networks, some have expressed feeling betrayed by the government and the Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo).

Imoveqroo launched a public tender for the golf cart project in September of 2024. With the recent approval, the general public will be able to rent golf carts for use in the coastal area as well as the Jaguar Park and the center of Tulum, among others. With the general public use of golf carts, Tulum will be joining other towns such as Holbox and Isla Mujeres where tourists can rent them for self transport.
