Military troops sent to Bacalar after criminal gang attack

Bacalar, Q.R. — The State Attorney General (FGE) has begun an official investigation into an attack on nine homes and five vehicles that also left one man was dead. According to the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the attacks were by a known criminal group.

The attack that left homes riddled with bullets and one man dead happened in the town of El Gallito in the municipality of Bacalar. The tiny town, which has a population of less than 200, made the news Thursday after the group set fire to at least two vehicles and left one man dead in the street.

“The first investigations indicate that this event was a direct attack by a criminal group that generates violence in the area, which left material damage to nine homes, four compact vehicles and a tractor,” the FGE reported.

One adult male, who they have not identified, was killed. He was found laying on his back in the middle of an intersection.

On Thursday, armed military were sent into the area in search of those responsible for the 7:00 a.m. destruction.

“After the events, elements of the FGE, together with the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), National Guard, Secretariat of the Navy, Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and Bacalar Municipal Police, maintained an operation in the municipality and surrounding areas to find the person or persons responsible.”

Violence began shortly after 7:00 a.m. Thursday which lead to several 9-1-1 reports of gunfire. According to local reports, a criminal gang that operates out of the area is a branch of the Sinaloa Cartel and has a rivalry with members from the Caborca Cartel, who are being blamed for the Thursday attack.

Their rivalry is over territory, farmland used to land small planes alleged loaded with narcotics. Local officials have not announced arrests. The name of the deceased and how he was involved has not been made known.
